| breast cancer | BACKGROUND: microRNA-210 expression in breast carcinoma represents an appealing prognostic tool, but no consensus exists on this debating topic. OBJECTIVE: We conducted this comprehensive meta-analysis to summarize evidence for use of microRNA-210 to predict patients' clinical outcomes. METHODS: Relevant literatures were identified using Pubmed and EMBASE. Patients' clinical characteristics and survival related data were extracted. Statistics extracted from Kaplan-Meier survival curves were calculated with methods developed by Parmar, Williamson, and Tierney, multivariate Cox hazard regression analysis data were used directly in Revman 5.0. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated to evaluate the prognostic role of microRNA-210. RESULTS: Finally, 7 studies containing 822 patients were considered eligible, pooled HR (95% CI) of studies for overall survival was 3.94 (1.90-8.15), for disease/recurrence free survival was 3.47 (2.63-4.60) and for metastasis free survival was 2.70 (1.46-5.00). We then respectively grouped the meta-analysis by patients' region (Asia and non-Asia), tumor estrogen receptor/ progesterone receptor/Her-2 expression status (positive or negative) and treatment strategy (preoperative systemic treatment or only surgery). All the subgroup analysis showed stable prognostic value. CONCLUSIONS: Over-expressed microRNA-210 demonstrated a significantly higher risk of recurrence, metastasis and overall decreased survival rates for breast cancer patients. |
| colorectal cancer | MicroRNA-210 (miR-210), the master hypoxamir, plays pleiotropic roles in certain cancers; however, its role in the development of human colorectal cancer remains unclear. Herein, we report that miR-210 is frequently up-regulated in colorectal cancer tissues, with high miR-210 expression significantly correlating with large tumor size, lymph node metastasis, advanced clinical stage and poor prognosis. Functionally, miR-210 overexpression promotes the migration and invasion of colorectal cancer cells. Furthermore, miR-210 can be induced by hypoxia and mediates the hypoxia-induced metastasis of colorectal cancer cells. In addition, vacuole membrane protein 1 (VMP1) is identified as the direct and functional target of miR-210. Thus, miR-210 is a useful biomarker for hypoxic tumor cells and a prognostic factor that plays an essential role in colorectal cancer metastasis. |
| non-small cell lung cancer | OBJECTIVE: To investigate the levels of microRNA-210 (miR-210) in the serum of patients with nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to determine whether there was a correlation with the prognosis of NSCLC patients following cisplatin-based chemotherapy. METHODS: Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to measure the serum levels of miR-210 in patients with NSCLC and healthy age-matched control subjects. Correlations between serum miR-210 levels and clinicopathological factors and prognosis were investigated. RESULTS: Serum miR-210 was significantly upregulated in 60 patients with NSCLC compared with 30 healthy control subjects. Higher serum miR-210 levels were significantly correlated with the clinical stage and the presence of regional lymph node metastasis in patients with NSCLC. Serum miR-210 levels in patients that achieved a partial response following cisplatin-based chemotherapy were significantly lower than in patients with stable or progressive disease, and were similar to those in healthy control subjects. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that serum miR-210 levels might be a novel diagnostic and prognostic marker of NSCLC. |
